AdvertisementHistorically, a hedge fund's chief investment office or senior portfolio manager was responsible for vetting and wooing key investment hires. They can also help hedge funds save on outside recruiting costs, which can add up to tens of millions a year. Hedge funds targeted institutional salespeople at investment banks with exposure to hedge funds, as well as asset allocators with chops in portfolio-manager selection and due diligence. Assets at multimanager hedge funds have boomed since 2018. The principle may work for fictional baseball diamonds, but the reality at hedge funds is more complicated.

They want youThe most important thing to understand in the job hunt is that by the time you see an offer, they want you. They've made the offer a little slimmer than they expect to end up because they know there will be movement. It's not all about base payWhen most people think about negotiating a job offer, they often think about base pay, or the salary or hourly rate. So negotiate that job offer, and get what you deserve.

Alpha capture strategies take inputs from sources like human traders, market data, sell-side research, and more and then use a systematic process to create a portfolio that is efficiently sized and hedged. CenterBook uses trading data from dozens of external firms to create its portfolios, while Norias will create its book off the ideas of its fundamental analysts. Meanwhile, Man Group is building out an alpha capture team within its AHL unit's special strategies team, a recent job posting states, and Squarepoint is doubling its team, finding external managers for its buy-side alpha capture program. Finance executives, consultants and headhunters interviewed by Reuters predict subdued deal flows, modest bonuses for most and heavy job cuts in 2024. "2023 will ultimately be one of the lowest corporate finance fee pools in modern history," said Fabrizio Campelli, head of Corporate Bank and Investment Bank at Deutsche Bank. REUTERS/Evgenia Novozhenina/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMOSCOW, Oct 23 (Reuters) - The number of Russians who say their salary does not cover basic spending has jumped by 20 percentage points in two years to almost half, a survey by recruiter Headhunter showed, as Moscow diverts record fiscal resources to funding its war in Ukraine. Asked whether their salary was enough to cover basic spending, without taking into account income from second jobs or investments, just one in five Russians surveyed said yes. That is up from 25% in 2021 and 39% in 2022, Headhunter's survey showed. Of the 45% lacking the money for basic spending, more than half said they were at least 20,000 roubles ($212) short per month. The average monthly nominal wage earned by Russians was 71,419 roubles ($756) in July, Rosstat's statistics show.

Ozon, one of Russia's top e-commerce companies, raised nearly $1 billion in an initial public offering (IPO) in late 2020, a debut that sparked a mini-IPO boom for Russian firms. Trading in Ozon's securities on Nasdaq was suspended soon after Russia despatched troops to Ukraine in February 2022, as were Russian company listings on the London Stock Exchange. "Our ADSs will not be delisted from Nasdaq until all available review and appeal procedures and periods available under the Nasdaq listing rules have expired," Ozon said in a statement. In late July, Ozon's ADSs began trading on Kazakhstan's Astana International Exchange (AIX), a move that it said could increase liquidity, especially for international investors to trade its securities. Logos of Swiss banks UBS and Credit Suisse are seen in Zurich, Switzerland March 20, 2023. In Switzerland, up to 10,000 jobs could be affected with Zurich bearing the brunt if UBS goes ahead with its indicated preferred option of absorbing Credit Suisse and cutting overlapping jobs and operations. "The large banks have many highly paid very specialized roles, where frankly there is very little demand in the market outside UBS and Credit Suisse," he said. Job cuts at Credit Suisse will hit Swiss and foreign nationals on its payroll, which may mean some have to leave Switzerland if they can't find a new job. Swiss banks have been looking in particular to snap up relationship managers with strong client relationships and solid books.

Panic is setting in at investment banks across Wall Street as junior bankers are thrust into the whirlwind of private equity recruiting. Private equity recruiting is an annual Wall Street ritual, albeit an unwelcome one for some investment banks. Coffee chats vs on-cycleWhich private equity firms are recruiting and when is somewhat murky — for good reason. Private equity firms have also begun hosting events, including an invite-only networking social with KKR Thursday night and online information sessions hosted by Hellman & Friedman Wednesday. Money is pouring into the hedge fund business, adding to a war for talent. Maybe a bunch of NBA or NFL players end up on a trading floor for charity. The war for talent is partly a reflection of hedge-fund performance. My colleague Alex Morrell wrote recently:After years of relative quiet, macro strategies at hedge funds surged back to life in 2022 amid rising interest rates, inflation, and geopolitical convulsions. Writing for Insider recently, hedge-fund recruiter John Pierson said that "the competition for investment talent is escalating, and finding top portfolio managers is no longer a contact sport — it's an all-out war."

The largest hedge funds are using their high fees to attract and retain new talent. The competition for investment talent is escalating, and finding top portfolio managers is no longer a contact sport — it's an all-out war. The types of senior portfolio managers in high demand are those who command attention and have uncommon idea flows. What makes portfolio managers moveMost portfolio managers aren't driven by compensation; they've typically made out well financially. John Pierson is the founder and CEO of P2 Investments, a New York-based talent-acquisition firm that specializes in recruiting hedge-fund portfolio managers.
An investigation has found that Russia has been using a popular job website to entice war recruits. Some of the roles offer salaries 10x the average Russian monthly salary of 63,060 rubles ($810). Military employers searching on the site included the 43rd Regiment of the Russian Guard and the contractual recruitment office for military service in Tver Oblast and the Kemerovo and Novgorod regions. Last month, the Russian military launched a video campaign to lure more soldiers into fighting in Ukraine. The Russian military has consistently hinted at the possibility of a second mass mobilization, with one expected at the beginning of the year and another in April.
Heavyweight multi-strategy hedge funds aren't known for their patience. It seems their patience has run out on the index-rebalance strategy, one of the most popular and sought-after hedge fund moneymakers in recent years. Representatives for the hedge funds declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment. While hedge funds are allocating their capital elsewhere, they haven't given up on index-rebalance trading. Do you know more about the index-rebalance trade?

ghSmartThe company's unusual but rigorous approach to screening job candidates has won it the trust of some of the finance industry's most competitive and coveted workplaces, as well as other blue-chip corporations. "That became the kernel for ghSmart," Smart recounted in a podcast interview. That means the ghSmart interview isn't something you can necessarily prepare for in the same way you might, for example, read up on certain stocks or industry trends. Credit Suisse staff have swamped recruiters across the globe amid the UBS deal, per Bloomberg. It said one recruiting firm had 30 calls on Monday, while another spoke to 20 bankers since last week. The day after Credit Suisse and UBS announced the acquisition deal, a recruiting firm in Singapore received around 30 inquiries from mostly Credit Suisse private bankers, the people told Bloomberg. A headhunter based in London told Bloomberg that Credit Suisse staff flooded him with calls over the weekend. They added that Credit Suisse will "do everything we can to ensure an orderly transition and to serve our clients as best as possible."
The fate of Credit Suisse's investment bank hangs in the balance after being sold to UBS. The investment bank's planned spinoff has been put on hold and bankers are bracing for job cuts. People said they expect Credit Suisse's planned spinoff of its investment banking operations, announced last year, to be scuttled. Over at 11 Madison Ave., where Credit Suisse's NY operations are headquartered, emotions were running hot on Monday. Now, the proposed CS First Boston deal hangs in the balance, with both industry experts and Credit Suisse employees uncertain whether it will go through.
